Nalanda University, under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sunaina Singh, has once again bagged the Exemplary Performance Award in Renewable Energy Utilization category for its exemplary performance in achieving the sustainable goals and commitments towards Net Positive Approach. The GRIHA Council during its 10 th Summit at New Delhi, in an attempt to recognize the exemplary ideas for achieving sustainability and appreciate the initiatives/efforts of various project teams had organized the GRIHA Exemplary Performance Award-2018.
The award was received by Professor Sunaina Singh, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor – Nalanda University on 11 th December 2018 in a glittering award ceremony and valedictory event organised by the GRIHA Council in India Habitat Center, New Delhi. This is consecutive and second time that the project concept and approach have been awarded by the GRIHA Council, under Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, GoI.
The University campus is designed with unique water and energy system to achieve the goal of SELF-SUSTAINABLE NET-ZERO CAMPUS by using indigenous, new and renewable energy sources with the integration of various innovative technologies like use of enhanced Desiccant Evaporative (DEVAP) technology for cooling/heating of the buildings, use of Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) blocks instead of common burnt clay bricks, use of integrated boxes of masonry to achieve seismic stability, use of thick cavity walls to increase thermal resistance, climate appropriate landscape design to reduce potable water demand, Decentralized Water Treatment (DeWAT) systems, strategies for efficient waste management system, Biogas operated Combined Heat & Power (CHP) engine, Solar PV captive power plant, Cooling as well as cleaning of the air through use of selected native plants, etc.
The campus combines state-of-the art technologies with planning principles of the ancient Nalanda University to create a carbon neutral and zero waste campus. The whole master plan in itself is transitional, as it demonstrates the integration of the campus into a large eco- system of the site.
