INAUGURATION OF CENTRE FOR SOUTHEAST ASIANSTUDIES AT NALANDA UNIVERSITY | CSEAS

March 31, 2026 | Nalanda University marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), reinforcing India’s deepening engagement with ASEAN nations through academic, cultural, and strategic collaboration. The initiative builds upon the announcement made by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during the 22nd ASEAN India Summit in October 2025, reinforcing a sustained commitment to strengthening regional partnerships through knowledge exchange. The launch coincided with the University’s Second Convocation, adding to the significance of the occasion.
The Centre was formally inaugurated by Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, Ambassador Periasamy Kumaran, in the presence of distinguished international dignitaries. Among them were Ambassador of Timor-Leste to India Mr. Karlito Nunes, Ms. Archana Nair, Joint Secretary Nalanda Division, MEA, GOI, alongside senior diplomats and representatives from ASEAN
member states. Their presence underscored the growing importance of Nalanda University as a platform for regional dialogue and cooperation across Southeast Asian region.
Ambassador P. Kumaran, noted that the CSEAS at Nalanda University is structured around ten interdisciplinary research clusters – spanning climate, maritime studies, trade, heritage, public health, migration, digital cooperation, and international relations. He emphasised that the Centre would serve as a key knowledge partner to the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic
Partnership Plan of Action (2026–2030), while acting as a vital bridge to strengthen academic collaboration, policy engagement, and civilisational ties between India and Southeast Asia.
In his welcome address, Vice Chancellor Professor Sachin Chaturvedi emphasised that the Centre would strengthen the intellectual foundations of India’s Act East Policy. He highlighted that the Centre would further deepen civilisational linkages while promoting contemporary policy relevant research and dialogue.
The establishment of CSEAS represents a forward-looking institutional step, positioning Nalanda University as a key node in advancing India–ASEAN academic and strategic engagement in the evolving regional landscape.
