27th October 2021: Nalanda University Welcomes Hon’ble MoS External Affairs Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh

Nalanda University, in its new avatar, is all-set to welcome Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Education on 28th October 2021. Dr Singh will be on a two day visit to the University to see the progress made of this unique project which is very close to the hearts of both the Union Government and the State Government. Eight centuries after its destruction, the ‘Bhagirath Prayas’ of Professor Sunaina Singh, Vice Chancellor, under the guidance and enormous support of Dr. S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs and Shri Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar, Nalanda University has become the largest ‘Net-Zero Campus’.

A sprawling campus of 455 acre located at the picturesque foot hills of Rajgir was gifted by the Shri Nitish Kumar with a vision not only to revive the glorious tradition of creating knowledge society but also to showcase harmony with nature through his mantra of “Jan, Jeevan, Hariyali”. Nalanda shows the way that with innovative approach, guided by our ancient Indian indigenous energy models, a sustainable campus can be built. Consistent efforts and hard work of Professor Singh has set an example to be emulated. 80 percent of the construction work is already complete in just three years. In addition to developing hard infrastructure, the university has scaled up soft infrastructure as well with six schools and 12 academic programmes. With an aim to overcome energy crisis and to protect our environment for future generation, approximately 200 Net-Zero Energy Buildings are on the verge of completion. More importantly, despite devastating implications of Covid-19, the university continued its academic programme and construction works, making it one of the most diverse campus with 30 plus nationalities at the campus, and completed all courses timely.

Given the fact that the university is under the aegis of MEA, the visit of Minister Singh becomes more significant as he himself is educationist and a great advocate of ‘harmony with nature’ and innovative approach. The minister visit will not only boost the energy of diverse population of students, but will also provide an opportunity for Team Nalanda to evaluate the progress and chart the course of action for the future. It also displays commitment of the Indian Government and the MEA towards renewal of this ancient seat of learning. Nalanda University demonstrates a carbon neutral and zero-waste campus model which can be emulated by many. Being a nodal agency for connecting with academic institutions of ASEAN countries through ASEAN-India Network of Universities, Nalanda University will play an important role in India’s ‘Act East’ policy. Dr RK Ranjan Singh’s visit is the first ministerial visit to the campus in its new avatar.

In the Distinguished Lecture Series program some outstanding academicians and scientists are invited to deliver their talks that bring their unique vision and path breaking research to the community of scholars and researchers at Nalanda University. Through these lectures, students of Nalanda are being exposed to a diverse field of studies and research that is happening across world.

The speaker invited for lecture series this month was Professor Godabarisha Mishra who is an eminent scholar of Hindu and Buddhist Philosophy. He has been former head of the Department of Philosophy, University of Madras. He has also served as former secretary of Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR), Delhi and a Visiting Fellow at Oxford University, UK.

In his lectures, Prof. Mishra highlighted the aspects of Indian systems of treatises (Shastras) and their relevance in modern days. He also emphasised upon the mythological diverging methods of the Indian intellectual system of discernment and the western approach for it. On the first day of the lecture series, Prof. Mishra pointed out the difference between the Sanskrit word Darshana and its equivalent English term Philosophy. Discussions and deliberations followed his lecture with a focus on the uniqueness of Indian viewpoint on metaphysical questions and why the philosophy of India has not been recognized on a par with Western philosophy before India’s independence.

The second lecture outlined the historical progress of Indian philosophy – from Gautama Buddha to Nagarjuna. During this talk, Prof. Mishra described how Gautama-Buddha infused a sense of rationality into Indian philosophical tradition over the Vedic orthodoxy and how this tradition of the Dhamma carried forward by Buddhist philosophers such as Nagarjuna which later developed as the scholastic tradition of Nalanda.

February 10, 2021: Nalanda Contributes growth and well-being of farmers in Bihar

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Sunaina Singh inaugurated seven aquifer storage and recovery pits created by Nalanda University in the villages of Meyar and Nekpur. This project is funded by the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR). The recharge pits were created for the farmers as the winter advances, the ground water level depletes leading to water scarcity and crop failure in this region.

The innovative research was developed by Ecology and Environment Studies experts on water management in the last two years, was translated into seven aquifer storage and recovery pits. Due to this innovative method and mechanism, the water levels increased from 30 feet to 15 feet. Prof. Singh highlighted how education and knowledge should translate into well-being of the community. She encouraged University faculty to pursue researches on Climate Change, Natural Calamity, Flood Control Systems, etc. which would be significant for the lives of the people.

She also spoke about keeping Hon’ble Prime Minister vision of Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas, research with a view to create a water bank for the community by the Nalanda University. The concerned villagers attended in a big number and appreciated the Vice Chancellor’s initiative and applauded such efforts towards their community. The farmers mentioned about chemicals and fertilizers removal by the recharge pits constructed at the village and may also improve the water scarcity problems.

This project is a model of Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) technology using floodwaters to provide an opportunity for farmers to raise their income. A model for implementation, including awareness, local capacity and chain of facilities, will be available in a manual to ensure the sustainability of the technology and wider adoption in the region in areas with similar hydrological characteristics.

The state of Bihar is especially vulnerable to floods and droughts, often leading to significant disruption in agriculture – the mainstay of people’s life and property. South Bihar has the potential to emerge as one of the major agricultural hubs of eastern India. During the winter, crops like wheat are particularly at risk due to depletion of groundwater, which has emerged as a major source of irrigation in recent years particularly in the view of erratic monsoonal rains. Ensuring reliable irrigation sources is one of the key challenges for sustaining agriculture in South Bihar. ASR projects can provide innovative support to sustainable intensification of small-holder farmers by creating an underground water bank, build resilience to climate change, and raise incomes from agriculture and allied activities.

The pilot project in Rajgir has demonstrated the feasibility of ASR in both hard rock and deep alluvial aquifers, the prominent aquifer types in the marginal alluvial plains of South Bihar and elsewhere. Successful implementation of ASR in these two villages can augment usable water resources for agriculture during the winter cropping season. More importantly, ASR can adapt to local circumstances and challenges under changing climatic conditions.

The project team led by Dr. Prabhakar Sharma was present on the occasion. Faculty members, officials, and the students from the University participated in the programme.

Deakin’s collaborative and supportive research culture and the associated global rankings affirm its growing international research reputation.

Abstract of Lecture:

Technology has come a long way in the last decade. Whereas traditionally we may have known what ‘job’ we wanted to do when we ‘grow up’, nowadays, many of the jobs for the next generation may well not yet have been invented. Researchers are at the frontier of this new wave of innovation and we are only just beginning to think about the possible applications for these emerging technologies (e.g. advanced manufacturing, data mining and visualisation). This presentation provides an insight into industry (including government and community) driven research needs encountered by Deakin University’s Centre for Regional and Rural Futures (CeRRF) as it straddles the interface of industry and academia. CeRRF’s research scope is broad and comprises expertise in agriculture, engineering, science, environment, climate change, policy, economics and urban planning. This presentation features projects touching on these areas in our efforts to drive sustainable regional growth, build capacity, and improve risk management.

Bio-Sketch of Dr. Halliwell:

Dr. Halliwell joined Deakin University in 2015 as Director of the Centre for Regional and Rural Futures (CeRRF), a research centre with a focus on regional productivity. He has 22 years’ experience in industry driven research in the agriculture and water sectors. Previous roles include Chief Executive Officer for Water Research Australia Limited and Research Director with the Victorian Department of Primary Industries. He is a researcher at heart with a focus on engaging with industry to understand and solve their problems.

August 25, 2016: Nalanda University Becomes the first University to Adopt Khadi for its Academic Regalia

The University has officially adopted Khadi for its Academic Robes. Governing Board Member, Lord Meghnad Desai made this announcement at a Press Conference in Rajgir earlier today.

Speaking to the media he said, “The University wanted its academic dress to be in broadly in line with the internationally accepted guidelines on academic dress but to also have a distinctively Indian touch. The university experimented with fabrics that are woven in and around Nalanda and in Bihar and made a choice of trying to innovate with regalia made of khadi, the fabric at the heart of Indian identity with multiple symbolisms.”

While the heavy velvet gowns that are the norm in the west, were designed to keep out the cold in old buildings, in the Indian weather, khadi is also the most climatically appropriate fabric.

“In opting for khadi for our regalia, Nalanda University becomes the first and only Indian university to have its entire academic regalia in the national fabric.” he added.

Academic costume or regalia is an important part of the identity of any institution. It defines the institution and is part of the abiding moment in the lives of all the graduates from the university and something they wear with pride. Once set, the academic regalia will define the identity of the institution for many years to come.

India has not adopted any National level code for academic regalia and so, Nalanda University was free to set its own rules with regard to colour and trimmings etc. The regalia as defined is as shown in the accompanying table.

Talking about other details of the convocation the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Gopa Sabharwal revealed that the Academic Procession will walk to the orchestral composition titled Swagtam, literally meaning welcome, by the legendary Veena maestro and composer Emani Sankara Sastry who was the director of the National Orchestra of All India Radio, the AIR Vadya Vrinda, and chief producer of music.

The University will also be presenting a unique Memento to the President, Chief Minister and Governor. The memento is a replica of the Compressed Stabilised Earth Block (CSEB), which is going to be used instead of bricks in building Nalanda, and carries the Nalanda Logo. Unlike burnt brick, the Nalanda Brick is produced from soil compressed at high pressure and the embodied energy is almost half that of burnt brick.

Lord Desai also announced that the Chancellor’s Gold Medal will be awarded to Ms. Shaashi Ahlawat from the School of Historical Studies and Ms. Sana Salah from the School of Ecology and Environment Studies.

September 22, 2015: Nalanda University receives an endowment of $ 1 million from Dr Rajendra and Mrs Ursula Joshi

This endowment made to the University and will be used to support a Professorial Chair in the School of Historical Studies.

Nalanda University has received an endowment of $ 1 million to support a Professorial Chair in the School of Historical Studies from Dr. Rajendra Kumar Joshi and his wife Mrs Ursula Joshi.

The symbolic cheque was handed over by Mrs Ursula Joshi to the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Gopa Sabharwal at an Endowment Ceremony held on September 22, 2015 in New Delhi.

This is the second personal endowment of this kind to the University, the earlier being a donation from Ambassador Madanjeet Singh’s South Asia Foundation for the same amount. The modalities of that donation are still being worked out. Nalanda University has also received endowments from countries like Australia, China, Singapore, Laos and Thailand. It has also received endowments in the form of books from individual donors.

Thanking Dr Rajendra Joshi and Mrs Ursula Joshi for their contribution, the Vice Chancellor Dr. Gopa Sabharwal said, “This endowment to the University is really valuable for us specially in these formative years. We are specially thankful that the Joshis despite their background in pharmaceuticals decided to support the School of Historical Studies to acknowledge the importance of this discipline in the present age. At a time when History and indeed the Liberal Arts need a lot of support a gesture like this is immensely valuable.”

Dr. Rajendra Joshi, now a Swiss citizen has his roots in India, Rajasthan and is a graduate of BITS Pilani. He founded a pharmaceutical company Fumapharm with other partners in Switzerland and is credited with development of highly effective drugs for the treatment of psoriasis and multiple sclerosis. Fumapharm was bought over by the US based company Biogen Idec and the drug that Dr Joshi developed, now a very successful medicine globally, is marketed as Tecfidera.

In 2006, Dr. Joshi and Mrs Joshi started the Rajendra and Ursula Joshi Foundation (JCF) in Zurich, Switzerland to bring the Swiss Dual System of Apprentice Training in India.

The foundation has started its first Vocational Education and Training project through The Rajendra & Ursula Joshi Skill Development Pvt. Ltd in Jaipur.

Talking about the motivation behind the contribution, Dr Joshi’s nephew Dr. Nalin Joshi, said “Dr R.K Joshi is a committed “Bharatvanshi” and he is not only an admirer of Indian culture but has a very strong belief in the Jagadguru image of the country. He believes that “knowledge gives humility, from humility one attains character and wealth and with that good deeds can follow nirvana”. In his opinion revival of this distinguished centre of education will fulfil the purpose of imparting knowledge.”

Mrs. Ursula Joshi who handed over the cheque to symbolically signify the transfer of funds, said, “My husband and I are very much interested in the education system in India. As Nalanda University is one of the oldest universities of the world, we want to contribute in revival of such a prestigious institution particularly by supporting a Professorial Chair in the School of Historical Studies. Similarly we are also working towards bringing the Swiss Dual System of apprenticeship in India. In this regard BSDC in Jaipur will be inaugurated very soon.”

Nalanda University based in Rajgir, Bihar was established by an Act of Parliament in 2010 and is designated as an “Institution of National Importance”. Nalanda is a stand-alone international university unlike any other established in the country and is supported by several East Asia Summit countries. The University admitted its first batch of students in the School of Ecology and Environment Studies and the School of Historical Studies in 2014. It plans to start “The School of Buddhist Studies, Comparative Religion and Philosophy” in 2016.
