Dr. Shyam S. Phartyal holds a Master’sand a Ph.D. in Forestry from Kumaun University, Nainital and Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, India. He is one of the leading plant scientists in India with core research expertise in Seed Ecology of wild plants that grow in diverse habitats, ranging from wetlands to woodlands. His other research interests are citizen science, forest fire, plant-animal interaction,micro-climate ecology,and plant phenology using live and her barium specimens.

He has published 73peer-reviewed research papers (with>1500 citations and 18 h-index: link) and serves as an Associate Editor of Functional Ecology – a flagship journal of the British Ecological Society;link)’and’ Seed Science and Technology- an official journal of International Seed Testing  Association;  link)’ and a reviewer for>35 reputed journals of plant sciences. Dr. Phartyal is a recipient of the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Experienced Researcher Fellowship to work at the University of Regensburg (Germany; link) and the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship at Hokkaido University (Japan; link). He has also been awarded Brussels City Govt’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium).

Before joining Nalanda University, he served as an Assistant Professor for 10 years at HNB Garhwal (Central) University. He is a member of the International Society for Seed Science (link), IUCN-SSC Seed Conservation Specialist Group (link) and IUCN-CEM-South Asia (link). Being a researcher of international repute, he is also one of the founding members of SeedArc: A global archive of primary seed germination data (link), and an active member of several Global Research Networks (SoilTemp, HerbVar, TraitDivNet,Teatime4Science).
