Webinar Series on Remote Sensing: Prof. Sarnam Singh

In last four decades Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System technologies have made great impact in planning and decision making processes for the sustainable management of natural resources globally. Though the technologies and expertise are available, awareness, education and capacity building at various levels is needed for maximising societal benefits. Nalanda University and Space Education and Research Foundation (SERF), Ahmedabad jointly organised a Webinar on ‘A course on Remote Sensing’ from August 20, 2018 to August 30, 2018 with an objective to reach out a larger groups of academia in different countries in a shorter span of a time. Prof. Sarnam Singh, Professor and Dean School of Ecology and Environment Studies, Nalanda University delivered eight talks covering overview and basics of twin technologies and applications in ecology and forestry. A total of 560 participants from 33 countries were benefited. The series was live telecast on YouTube and class room in Nalanda University which was attended by 40 Master students of the school. Following topics were covered.

  • Introduction to Remote Sensing
  • Characteristics of Satellite Images
  • Image Processing and Classification of Satellite data
  • Introduction to Geographic Information System
  • Remote Sensing Applications in Forestry
  • Remote Sensing Applications in Forest Inventory
  • Remote Sensing Applications in Biodiversity Characterization
  • Remote Sensing Applications in Forest Disasters

Several education centres displayed the talks via projectors in their auditorium for group participation. Each talk was followed by question and answer session of 15 minutes but the enthusiasm and interest of the participants was so high that each of the sessions had to be extended up to 25 minutes. The progamme has been appreciated by all the participants. Multiple Choice Questions papers were provided to the participants and successful participants will be provided a certificate by SERF.
