Course Introduction:
Pāli language is one of the ancient languages in India that has been found in Pāli literature, Tipitaka, or in Theravāda Buddhism. The language is no longer commonly used as a spoken language. Still, Pāli is for chanting in Theravāda Buddhist countries such as Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Lao, and a few southern areas in Vietnam. Besides chanting, it is helpful for academic purposes.
This course will focus on fundamental aspects of grammar, Karaka, verb tenses, and Sandhi. Students will learn nouns and pronouns ending with different vows, subject to be transformed in the rule of Karaka. The primary verb tenses will also be taught so that students can translate from Pāli to English and vice versa with a simple sentence structure. During sharing exercises in the online class, students read the Pāli sentence and the grammatical explanation of each word. Students can practice pronunciation and share Pāli grammar homework with other online classmates.
