Introduction to Sanskrit I

This course is an introduction to the grammar of classical Sanskrit. The goal of the course is for students to develop the skills required to read and write basic Sanskrit in devanāgarī script. While the primary focus is on reading and translation, students practice speaking by memorizing one or more verses per week and reading aloud. Students work through the first 12 chapters of the textbook, Devavāṇīpraveśikā: An Introduction to the Sanskrit Language, with occasional supplemental materials distributed by the instructor. Students are graded on class participation, weekly assignments, a mid-term, and a final exam. The course meets for a total of four hours per week (a three-hour lecture and a one-hour group tutorial per week). A copy of the textbook is made available to each student at the beginning of the semester. No prior knowledge of Sanskrit is required.

Introduction to Sanskrit II

This course completes the introductory sequence to the grammar of classical Sanskrit. The goal of the course is for students to develop more advanced skills, though at an introductory level, required to read and write Sanskrit in devanāgarī script. While the primary focus is on reading and translation, students practice speaking by memorizing one or more verses per week and reading aloud in class. Students complete the textbook, Devavāṇīpraveśikā: An Introduction to the Sanskrit Language (chapters 13-22) with occasional supplemental materials distributed by the instructor. Depending on the speed of the class, the end of the semester may include reading basic Sanskrit texts. Students are graded on class participation, weekly assignments, a mid-term, and a final exam. Students are required to have their own copy of the required readings. These books are made available to each student at the beginning of the semester. The course meets for a total of four hours per week (a three-hour lecture and a one-hour group tutorial per week). Prerequisite: Introduction to Sanskrit I or consent of instructor.

Intermediate Sanskrit I

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to reading Sanskrit texts at an intermediate level that relate to historical studies broadly conceived. The text(s) read varies according to instructor. Students build on their knowledge of classical Sanskrit by improving their reading skills, increasing their vocabulary, and gaining further familiarization with grammatical forms. Students also learn to read texts for their embedded cultural, social, and historical contexts. The text(s) is distributed on the first day of class to each student. Prerequisites: Introduction to Sanskrit I & II or permission of instructor.

Introductory Korean

“Introductory Korean” is designed for the postgraduate students who wish to use Korean language for their research in Korean history and culture. The students doing this course will learn the Korean alphabet (Hangeul), practice pronunciations, essential grammar and sentence structures and memorize vocabulary and expressions, essential for everyday situations. They will be able to will build a solid foundation in listening, speaking, reading and writing modern Korean language.
