
Dr. Sunil Gupta
Dr. Sunil Gupta was the fromer Director in-charge of the Allahabad Museum, a significant cultural institution under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. He earned his Ph.D. in archaeology from Deccan College, Pune, in 1998, focusing on the Indo-Roman sea trade. He has held prestigious fellowships, including the Charles Wallace Fellowship in the UK and the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship in Japan. A specialist in Indian Ocean archaeology, Dr. Gupta has been editing the Journal of Indian Ocean Archaeology since 2004 and has contributed extensively to maritime and historical studies in India and the world. Dr Gupta is widely travelled, having done archaeological fieldwork in Japan, China and East Africa. He was co-director of excavations of the Early Historic port-site of Kamrej (Gujarat) in 2003. Dr Gupta has papers in referred journals and in prestigious edited volumes published in India and abroad. He is the co-editor of the Journal of Indian Ocean Archaeology. His current focus is the archaeology of “trade and civilization” in the context of the early Indian Ocean world.
